The American Red Cross Health Care Training program is one of the most highly respected programs of its kind in the country. We prepare our graduates for rewarding careers in the growing health care field.

As a Certified Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide, you will have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality health care to residents in nursing homes, assisted-living facilities, hospital patients and clients in their homes.

Students will be taught the proper ways to move patients and the basics of personal care, feeding and bathing. Other skills covered include taking vital signs (temperature, pulse, breathing, and blood pressure), and how to respond to patient emergency situations.

To find out when current Nurse Assistant Training programs take place, please see our Course Schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Home Health Aide and a Certified Nurse Assistant?

A Home Health Aide completes a 80 hour training program and receives a certificate. Classes are offered during the day or evenings and meet four times per week, 6 hours per day. A Home Health Aide then assists clients in their homes with basic day-to-day activities.

A Certified Nurse Assistant must also complete 22 hours of clinical experience in a nursing home, pass a state certification exam, and then register with the state. After that a Certified Nurse Assistant will be able to work in nursing homes, and in some cases, hospitals, as part of a health care team.

Can I learn to be a Certified Nurse Assistant only?

No. The American Red Cross dual program gives the student more employment choices in the health care industry.

Is a payment plan available?

A minimum deposit of $200.00 holds your place in class and full payment must be received two weeks before the beginning of class in either the day or evening program.

I'm on welfare, will it help pay for this program?

Possibly. Speak to your caseworker about the many resources available to you. Contact Carole Moured at 978-683-2465 for more information.

I don't drive, how can I get to class?

Public transportation is available to our Ward Hill location. We also encourage a friendly relationship between classmates and many car pools are often arranged.

Is attendance mandatory? Is clinical mandatory?

Yes. Please plan to attend every class. Failure to attend or excessive tardiness may result in dismissal.

What happens after graduation? Is there job assistance/placement help?

Job opportunities are always posted in the classroom. On graduation day we may invite one to two employers that are recruiting for their facilities.

Will I need a physical examination from a doctor?

No. Students must provide results of a negative test for tuberculosis (TB), as students will be working in health care facilities where a negative TB test is mandatory. Students will also be asked to sign a health form stating that they have no restrictions on their lifting abilities.

What kind of salary can I expect to earn after graduation and certification?

Entry level salaries for Home Health Aides and Certified Nurse Assistance range between $10.00 and $11.00 per hour. It is a good idea to look through the classified section of your local newspaper or call around to different agencies for current rates and benefits offered.

What is the reputation of the American Red Cross with employers?

The American Red Cross Certified Nurse Assistant program is recognized nationally and representatives in the industry say that workers trained in our program are the best in their field.

Why should I choose the American Red Cross for my health care training?

For more than 90 years, the American Red Cross has trained men and women in the health care field, and has the most experience in teaching the adult learner. The American Red Cross teachers are some of the most experienced in the field.
